How To Choose A Compact Cordless Drill
- Power Options - Power is measured in Volts. The higher the volts the more powerful the drill. Increased Voltage means increased weight. However today's drills are much better designed than ever and the pricing is amazing. 12-18 Volts are the most popular.
- Batteries - Consider buying a kit with two(2) batteries. A backup battery means you'll never run short of power.
- Drill Speed - Variable speed is recommended for maximum control. Most cordless models have up to 800 RPM.
- Choosing Manufacturer - They are all good. Features are more important. Stick with the name brands. Most contractors like Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt, Festool and Bosch.
- Forward and Reverse - most have forward and reverse with the switch by the thumb or index finger.
- Hand Grip, Weight and Design - Choose a lightweight, well balanced model with a nice grip for most home projects.
- Keyless Chuck and Chuck Jaw - Hand turn, keyless feature is preferable. Most have a 3/8th inch chuck which is likely all you need unless you are a professional. There are models with 1/2 inch chucks as well.
- Pricing - Cordless Models start at about $20.00 and go up to about $700.00. For home and light construction there are some great deals in the $100.00 - $200.00 range. From my experience drills under $100.00 don't last and need to be replaced frequently. Drills over $200.00 are contractor quality.
- Which Drill To Buy - If you are looking for a high quality drill for light to medium sized projects around your home, consider a 3/8 inch chuck, variable speed, 12 - 18 Volt with forward and reverse, two batteries and lightweight.
